AFPI’s Governors’ Council Urges the Senate to Stop the Impending Government Shutdown

The Honorable Bobby Jindal September 30, 2025

Washington D.C.—Today, the America First Policy Institute’s (AFPI’s) Governors’ Council, led by the Honorable Bobby Jindal, sent a joint letter urging the Senate to pass a clean, short-term funding extension immediately.

“Make no mistake: Americans do not want a $1.5 trillion partisan wish list that bankrolls benefits for illegal immigrants while cutting historic investments in rural healthcare,” the Governors’ Council letter states. “They want stability, security, and responsible governance.”

The House has already advanced a clean, bipartisan funding extension, and the Senate approved the same measure just six months ago. “There’s no excuse not to do so again,” the letter states.

A government shutdown would threaten state economies and disrupt programs relied upon by families, seniors, veterans, and small businesses across the country. A short-term extension protects service members, veterans, and essential programs while preventing unnecessary disruption to state economies and communities.

The Governors’ Council urges the Senate to:

  1. Pass a clean, short-term funding extension immediately.
  2. Ensure service members, first responders, and federal employees receive their pay without disruption.
  3. Guarantee seniors and veterans continue receiving their benefits on time.
  4. Maintain continuity of essential programs, including food assistance for families.
  5. Reject partisan spending proposals that prioritize benefits for illegal immigrants while cutting historic investments in rural healthcare.
