AFPI’s Mayors’ Council Urges Senate to Avoid a Shutdown
Washington D.C.—Today, the America First Policy Institute’s (AFPI’s) Mayors’ Council, led by Mayor Scott Singer, issued a letter to the Senate, urging them to pass a clean, short-term funding extension immediately. When Washington fails to act, the local communities they lead suffer.
“When Washington gridlocks, America suffers,” the Mayors’ Council letter states. “Service members, firefighters, and first responders should never have their paychecks put at risk. Seniors and veterans should never face uncertainty about their benefits. Families should never wonder if food assistance programs will continue because Congress refuses to do its job. These consequences are real, immediate, and entirely avoidable.”
The Council said that the House has already passed a clean, bipartisan funding extension, and the Senate approved the same measure just six months ago. Keeping the government open protects essential programs, supports first responders, and ensures local communities are not left in chaos.
The Mayors’ Council urges the Senate to:
- Pass a clean, short-term funding extension immediately.
- Ensure service members, first responders, and federal employees receive their pay on time.
- Keep essential programs running for families and local communities.
- Focus on stability, security, and responsible governance rather than political games.
