AFPI Responds to Indictment of James Comey
Washington, D.C.— Former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey has been indicted on allegations that he obstructed a congressional investigation into the disclosure of sensitive information and made a false statement by claiming he did not authorize someone at the FBI to serve as an anonymous source.
The following statement is attributed to Brett Tolman, Chair of American Justice at the America First Policy Institute:
“A federal grand jury has determined that the former FBI Director should be indicted, while he still retains the presumption of innocence as the trial proceeds. This check on alleged abuse is necessary, as his actions as FBI Director left millions of Americans feeling that he operated above the law. Attorney General Pamela Bondi has made it clear that he will be held accountable if he misled trusting Americans who rely on objective, justice-focused leadership at the highest levels of law enforcement. If it is proven in court that he obstructed Congress and lied about critical information, he deserves to face the full weight of the justice system and be punished accordingly.”
“It was widely reported that then-Director Comey pushed for—and manipulated—the justice system to prosecute former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. Ironically, Comey has now been indicted under the same statute, as well as for obstruction of justice."
“While some may celebrate Comey's indictment, if he is found guilty of these crimes, it serves as a reminder that our republic—while beautiful and full of potential—is also fragile. At times, devious and bad actors find their way into the public trust. As a nation, we must demand that our top law enforcement officials act without political bias, follow the evidence, and focus on exposing and holding accountable criminals—not political rivals.”
