AFPI Releases Policy Prescription to Ensure the Safety and Transparency of our Domestic Food Supply
Washington D.C.— Today, the America First Policy Institute (AFPI) issued the following statement from Governor Bobby Jindal, Chair of AFPI’s Healthy America initiative announcing a bold new policy reform:
“Today, AFPI released a critical policy proposal toward ensuring that our food supply is safe, transparent, and results in a healthier America. AFPI is both commending Secretary Kennedy on his move to close loopholes in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s oversight of the food additive regulatory framework, and recommending that Congress act now to definitively address this problem.
Under current law, food manufacturers can insert newly synthesized substances into our foods without notifying the FDA or disclosing safety data if a manufacturer self-affirms that a substance is ‘Generally Recognized as Safe’ (GRAS). The GRAS pathway is a major reason why American foods contain an estimated 15 times more ingredients— including preservatives, flavor enhancers, and other manmade compounds—than foods in Europe, and is riddled with conflicts of interest.
AFPI’s new policy recommends closing the self-affirmation loophole and eliminating conflicts of interest in GRAS science. These are key steps that Congress can take to ensure safe and healthy foods for all Americans.”
