A narrative exists among some tech leaders that AI could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs and “spike unemployment to 10-20% in the next one to five years” (VandeHei & Allen, 2025). In February 2026, panic set in for some after tech CEO Jack Dorsey laid off nearly half (4,000) of his employees, which he attributed to productivity gains from AI (Angelo, 2026).
