AFPI Supports Congressional Efforts to Improve Federal Supervised Release

Brett Tolman October 30, 2025

Washington, D.C. The America First Policy Institute (AFPI) applauds the introduction of the Safer Supervision Act, a bipartisan effort to revamp the federal supervised release system.

“One of the most important roles of the judiciary and prosecutors is to ensure supervision is adjusted as needed. The Safer Supervision Act complements the important work already being done, changing the culture of probation.” said Brett Tolman, Chair for Law & Justice at AFPI. “The Act encourages low-risk individuals to rebuild their lives and safely return to their communities while allowing probation officers to focus resources on those who pose a higher risk.”

The U.S. Sentencing Commission has recognized the need for reforms to judicial discretion and individualized assessments. The Safer Supervision Act is a data-driven approach that strengthens judicial discretion, reduces recidivism, and allows law enforcement to focus on high-risk cases.

The Safer Supervision Act will prioritize rehabilitation, reintegration, and better use of limited resources while keeping public safety at the forefront.
