The choice confronting Americans of which economic path to follow could not be starker. The America First path is steeped in the wisdom and ability of the American people to chart their own destinies. The other path forwarded by the progressive Left—a government-first path that has unleashed a cost-of-living crisis fueled by a tsunami of spending—puts its trust in elites and bureaucrats who are insulated from the daily struggles of regular Americans. Under an America First approach, the government’s limited mission is to empower our fellow Americans and defend their interests at home and abroad.
The unemployment insurance (UI) system, established under the Social Security Act of 1935, operates as a federal-state partnership in which federal law mandates the payroll tax while states administer their own programs. As part of this framework, states collect quarterly wage data from employers.
The Department of Labor (DOL)’s mission is to “foster, promote, and develop the welfare of the wage earners, job seekers, and retirees of the United States” (U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.). In the first year of the second Trump Administration, DOL has returned to this core mission as it increases its efforts to penalize employers who utilize illegal alien labor, exploit guest workers, undermine the American worker, and subsequently create a critical incentive for illegal immigration.
