Government Shutdown Threatens Supplemental Nutrition Assistance for Vulnerable Americans
Washington, D.C —Today, the America First Policy Institute (AFPI) issued the following statement from Tate Bennett, Director of Rural Policy, regarding the government shutdown and the upcoming halt of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP):
“Federal and state officials have confirmed that SNAP—commonly referred to as food stamps—will not be administered this November due to bad actors in the Senate insisting on keeping the government closed.
These radicals would rather shutter programs designed to help vulnerable Americans, like SNAP, in order to obtain taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal aliens, among other extreme provisions. They are refusing to put American families and children first.
Instead of prioritizing partisan giveaways, the Senate should act immediately to restore these benefits for those truly in need and get the government back to work. It’s unconscionable that they are willing to let American families go hungry while they fight for benefits for those who break our laws.”
