Steve Yates joins Fox Business to discuss China-Taiwan relations and the fentanyl epidemic.
Steve Yates, AFPI Senior Fellow and Chairman of the China Policy Institute, recently joined Fox Business to discuss the evolving China-Taiwan relations and the fentanyl epidemic. Yates emphasized the strategic implications of Taiwan’s new pro-China parliamentary leader, highlighting concerns over China’s potential "soft control" tactics akin to those used in Hong Kong. He stressed the necessity for Taiwan to bolster its defense capabilities amidst increasing Chinese aggression, urging the Biden administration to facilitate Taiwan’s acquisition of deterrent resources swiftly.
Shifting focus to the fentanyl crisis, Yates expressed skepticism about China's commitment to addressing the issue, citing personal tragedy and the broader American epidemic. He criticized the lack of substantial progress from recent talks between U.S. and Chinese officials, describing it as a betrayal of American families. Yates noted that during Trump’s tenure, China showed more responsiveness to American demands on fentanyl. He expressed doubt over the current administration's ability to exert similar pressure, suggesting that China perceives a lack of strong leadership. Yates underscored the need for more decisive actions and penalties against China to combat the deadly trade of fentanyl precursors, arguing for a robust response to safeguard American lives and national security.
