AFPI: Religious Targeting is Contradictory to Public Service
Washington, DC – Today, the America First Policy Institute released the below statement in response to news that Virginia Governor-Elect Abigail Spanberger has appointed Stanley Meador to the position of Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security. During his time at the FBI, Meador oversaw the Virginia office that surveilled and targeted traditional, Mass-going Catholics. This surveillance included the creation of a controversial memo that labeled “radical-traditionalist Catholics” as potential violent extremists.
“The position of Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security requires an ironclad commitment to stamping out discrimination and ensuring equal protection under the law. The controversial investigation of Catholics by Stanley Meador demonstrates a fundamental incompatibility with these requirements and an alarming willingness to weaponize government power in direct contrast to our most cherished national principles, including religious liberty. Such conduct should be immediately disqualifying.”
AFPI will continue to work to end the senseless weaponization of government and protect the fundamental right to religious liberty for all Americans.
