How Pastors Can Address Cultural Issues from the Pulpit

“Pastor, don’t get political—just preach the Word!”

It is a warning familiar to pastors. In today’s hyperpolarized climate, preaching that addresses social issues can feel perilous. Yet the cost of remaining silent is too high.

Pastors have the profound responsibility to shape the moral conscience of their congregations. If we fail to address pressing moral challenges, we leave a void that will inevitably be filled by something or someone. Colossians 2:8 warns that the “elemental spirits” of the world animate the philosophies and ideologies of the age. Therefore, pastors cannot avoid moral issues merely to avoid sounding partisan—public policy reflects the community’s deepest moral convictions.
