Newt Gingrich on America’s Future: Realignment, Reform, and Remembering Charlie Kirk

Ambassador Carla Sands September 18, 2025

In a candid and far-reaching conversation at the America First Policy Institute studios, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich sat down with Ambassador Carla Sands to discuss the past, present, and future of American politics. The interview touched on everything from the enduring influence of Lincoln and Roosevelt to the tectonic shifts reshaping today’s political landscape — and the legacy of conservative icon Charlie Kirk.

Carla Sands opened by recognizing Gingrich’s remarkable contributions to American political thought, including his authorship of 46 books. Gingrich responded with book recommendations rooted in historical literacy, pointing viewers to studies of America’s founding, Abraham Lincoln, and even Franklin D. Roosevelt. He also mentioned Advise and Consent by Allen Drury as a must-read for understanding the complexities of Washington.

Reflecting on his leadership during the 1990s, Gingrich highlighted key outcomes of the Contract with America — including welfare reform, regulatory modernization, and the creation of Medicare Advantage. Most notably, he reminded viewers that his Congress balanced the federal budget for four consecutive years — an achievement he believes is not only possible again, but essential.

The conversation turned to today’s volatile political climate. Gingrich argued that we are undergoing the most dramatic realignment since the Roosevelt era. While Ronald Reagan "bruised" the liberal order, Gingrich said, Donald Trump has "broken" it, initiating a more entrepreneurial, citizen-driven political model. He sees this moment as a historic inflection point — a chance to reverse decades of bureaucratic decay and restore accountability, safety, and freedom.

A significant portion of the interview centered on the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. Gingrich called Kirk “irreplaceable,” describing him as a once-in-a-generation conservative leader. He warned that Kirk’s death should be a wake-up call about the dangers of political violence and the cultural decay of the radical left. Gingrich also endorsed classifying groups like Antifa as terrorist organizations and stressed the need for restoring social cohesion and civic responsibility.

Looking forward, Gingrich expressed optimism. He believes America can emerge stronger by embracing technological innovation, educational freedom, and a renewed commitment to safe, civil society. He challenged young conservatives to help “invent the future” rather than just complain about the present — framing this era as a golden opportunity to revitalize the country.

Closing the conversation, Gingrich shared voter registration trends showing over 1.5 million Americans have switched from Democrat to Republican since the 2024 election — many in reaction to Kirk’s assassination. He framed this as proof that the country is ready for a new era of conservative leadership, rooted in patriotism, economic freedom, and a rejection of big-government socialism.

From historical insights to strategic vision, this conversation offers a compelling roadmap for America’s next chapter.
