The One Big Beautiful Bill Delivers for Georgia’s Working Families

Rebecca Yardley August 22, 2025

Here in Georgia, we know the value of hard work. From the fields of South Georgia to the small businesses along our Main Streets, it’s working families who keep our state strong.

But too often, those same families have watched Washington bureaucrats take a greedy bite out of their paychecks while giving little back in return. That’s why I’m proud to support the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB). This historic legislation finally puts working families first — and it will make a real difference here in Georgia.

Let’s start with the most immediate impact: more money in the pockets of Georgia families. This bill delivers the largest middle-class tax cut in American history. For the waitress in Savannah, the mechanic in Gainesville, or the teacher in Rome, it means you’ll keep more of what you earn. Tips and overtime will no longer be taxed by the federal government — a change that rewards extra effort instead of punishing it.. For Georgia families, that adds up to thousands of dollars that can help pay for groceries, fill your gas tank, or cover childcare fees without stretching the budget to the breaking point.

Families with children will see even more relief. The Child Tax Credit has increased from $2,000 to $2,200 per child, and for the first time, will automatically adjust for inflation. That might sound like a small change, but for a family in Athens raising three kids, it adds up fast. It’s recognition that the cost of raising a family is going up, and parents deserve some help.

One of the most exciting provisions for Georgia families is the creation of “Trump Accounts.” Starting this year, every baby born between 2025 and 2028 will receive a $1,000 savings account at birth. These funds grow tax-free and can be used for education, buying a first home, or even starting a small business when they grow up – a chance to chase their dreams and build a brighter future. It’s about more than a one-time benefit; it’s about building generational wealth and ensuring our children start life on a stronger footing than we did.

The OBBB doesn’t just help families; it strengthens small businesses and rural communities, the backbone of our state. Georgia is home to more than 1.4 million small businesses, which employ nearly 42.5 percent of our workforce. By preserving small business tax deductions and cutting red tape, this bill gives our entrepreneurs the tools they need to expand, hire, and invest locally. That means more jobs, more paychecks, and more opportunities for our neighbors.

Rural Georgia stands to benefit as well. This bill creates a $50 billion Rural Hospital Fund to keep facilities open and ensure that families in places like Telfair, Gilmer, and Dooly counties don’t have to drive hours to see a doctor. That’s a lifeline for communities that have felt overlooked and underserved for far too long, and for the many rural hospitals that have been on the brink of closure.

Some critics claim the bill will hurt working families. Let’s set the record straight. The reforms to safety net programs aren’t about taking away help — they’re about making sure help goes to those who truly need it. Work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents don’t punish — they empower. They give people the motivation to step into the workforce, gain skills, and achieve independence. In a state where our unemployment rate sits at just 3.5 percent, this bill ensures that our programs encourage work and self-reliance.

There’s also a huge win for another America-First priority: securing our border. The OBBB makes the largest investment in border security in decades, ensuring that taxpayer resources support American citizens and lawful residents — not those who break our laws. For Georgia families, it’s about ensuring safety and accountability — a priority brought into sharper focus by the heartbreaking loss of Laken Riley.

This is about restoring the American Dream — something we understand deeply here in Georgia. It’s about making sure a young couple in Macon can buy a home, that a grandmother in Valdosta can afford her prescriptions, and that a student in Atlanta has the chance to graduate without incurring crushing debt.

The One Big Beautiful Bill is more than just legislation. It’s a turning point. It says to every working family in Georgia: we see you, we value your hard work, and we’re fighting for your future. As the Executive Director of AFPI-Georgia, I couldn’t be prouder to stand behind this historic achievement. Because when Georgia families thrive, America thrives.
