Working Families Tax Cuts Are Helping Restore the American Dream

The Albuquerque Journal published this article on Wednesday, April 15.

For generations, the American Dream meant something simple: if you worked hard, played by the rules, and invested in your family, you could get ahead. The Trump Administration’s tax reforms reflect that basic principle, and it’s showing up in New Mexicans’ budgets, in paychecks and tax returns.

In New Mexico, the average taxpayer is seeing a tax cut of about $630 this year and $1,900 next year. Families with children are seeing average tax relief of about $800 this year and $2,800 next year. For families across New Mexico, this relief creates an opportunity to move from getting by to getting ahead.

Tax policy has typically recognized the added costs of raising a family, but these reforms go further, ensuring that families keeping our economy running can keep more of what they earn. The tax relief is showing up in the everyday work of Americans across the country. Police officers, truck drivers, and home health aides with families could see about $800 in savings this year and about $6,500 next year. A single nurse working overtime could see approximately $1,400 in tax relief this year and another $6,000 in tax savings next year.
