AFPI Responds to Federal Ruling on Election Security

WASHINGTON, D.C.— The America First Policy Institute (AFPI) today responded to U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani's nationwide ruling in Boston blocking President Trump’s executive order directing the U.S. Postal Service to verify mail-ballot eligibility, in the latest example of judges substituting their own policy preferences for the ordinary process of agency rulemaking and judicial review.

“Accurate voter rolls and a secure mail ballot process are not partisan goals; they are basic prerequisites for public confidence in our elections. The Postal Service already sets detailed standards for how mail is prepared and tracked, and ballot mail should have its own minimum standards,” said Ken Blackwell, chair of Election Integrity. “AFPI remains committed to advancing policies that make it easy to vote and hard to cheat, and we will keep making that case to policymakers in Washington and in the states.”

This ruling is one of several legal challenges brought by America Last groups and attorneys general against this executive order since it was signed, and the litigation is ongoing. AFPI submitted a public comment on the Postal Service’s proposed ballot mail rule earlier this year and will continue to press for accurate voter rolls and a secure mail ballot process.
