We Will Miss You Dearly, Coach Holtz

March 4, 2026

Washington, D.C.—The America First Policy Institute (AFPI) honors the extraordinary life and legacy of Coach Lou Holtz—a legendary leader, educator, and patriot whose influence extended far beyond the football field.

Coach Holtz was one of the most successful college football coaches in American history, leading Notre Dame to a National Championship and shaping generations of young men through faith, discipline, and character. After his coaching career, he continued to inspire the nation as a respected broadcaster, author, and speaker.

At the America First Policy Institute, Coach Holtz served as Chair of the Center for 1776, where he championed the timeless values that define American greatness and patriotism. Through initiatives like The Lou Holtz Show, produced by AFPI, he sought to elevate American culture by reminding citizens—especially young people—that life is defined by choices, responsibility, and service to others.

Coach Holtz’s lifelong commitment to faith, family, and country earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2020. His charitable work, including the founding of the Holtz Charitable Foundation, reflected his belief in empowering others through opportunity and education.

We extend our deepest sympathies to his family—his children and grandchildren—as well as to the countless athletes, students, and Americans whose lives were shaped by his leadership and example. His legacy will endure in the values he lived, taught, and defended.
